Our methodology focuses on the multiple intelligences approach, thus providing children with diverse pathways: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, inter personal and intra personal to explore, learn and develop using their varied intelligences. The children are free to choose the path that makes it easiest to understand and learn to read and write. The environment is designed so that it is stimulating and rich with learning experiences for the children. A range of activities including art n craft, concept time, song and rhyme time, story time, outdoor play as well as regular field trips ensure that the unique learning styles of all the children are addressed. Children are thus exposed to an environment, which is age appropriate, individually appropriate and culturally appropriate.
The most important goals of our present preschool curriculum are for the children to become confident, enthusiastic learners and to get along well with others.
The four objectives for development that address the above goals are as follows
Social/ emotional: to help children develop independence, self-confidence, and self-control. To follow rules and routines, to make friends, and to learn what it means to be a part of a group.
Physical: to increase children’s large muscle skills by doing tasks, such as balancing, running, jumping, throwing, and catching. Also to use the small muscles in their hands to do tasks such as buttoning, stringing beads, cutting, drawing, and writing.
Cognitive: to acquire thinking skills, such as the ability to solve problems, to ask questions, and to think logically. Also to sort, classify, compare, count, and make patterns, and to use materials and their imaginations to show what they have learned.
Language: to use words to communicate with others, listen to and participate in conversations with others, understand the purpose of print, recognize letters and words, and begin to write for a purpose. In addition to all of the opportunities that occur in each classroom, the preschool emergent literacy program provides additional opportunities for exposure to all the facets of all of the objectives.
Every child is a unique individual with different learning styles- visual, auditory, tactile/kinesthetic or a combination of several. Through the activities that are planned in each classroom, the materials chosen, the daily schedules, and the communications among children and adults, we seek to accomplish the goals and objectives to have very successful students, each in his/her own way.
We have used a lot of ideas from Creative Curriculum and Learning with the Letter People in order to make design our curriculum. The staff also incorporates many creative ideas which they have or are learning through training during the year to make both curriculum’s even better for the children.
If there is a child in the preschool with special needs, the staff will provide as best as they can to meet the needs of the child, considering placement, space, materials, and curriculum. If Spring Valley Preschool cannot fully meet the needs of the child, the staff will work with the parents and child to find ways to meet those
Our curriculum consists of the following main themes
